Australia’s Council of Capital City Lord Mayors (CCCLM) will converge on Canberra today to discuss important policy issues with Federal political leaders, including the Prime Minister.
CCCLM Chair, Melbourne Lord Mayor Robert Doyle said strong relationships between all levels of Government is integral for the future liveability and prosperity of our capital cities.
“Australia’s cities are our economic engine rooms. They generate almost two-thirds of our nation’s Gross Domestic Product and house three quarters of our workforce,” Lord Mayor Doyle said.
“The importance of cities is emerging as the mega trend of the 21st century which is not surprising given that 400 cities make up the entire global economy.
“The purpose of our meetings in Canberra this week is to discuss the vital issues affecting our cities with our Federal leaders. We have produced policy papers which outline what each tier of government is doing about emission reductions, international education, homelessness and alcohol management. These documents also explore how we can collaborate to fast-track programs and policies that have been successful.”
Lord Mayor Doyle, ACT Chief Minister Katy Gallagher, Lord Mayor of Brisbane Graham Quirk, Lord Mayor of Perth Lisa Scaffidi, and Deputy Lord Mayor of Darwin Jeanette Anictomatis will also hold CCCLM meetings in Canberra to discuss shared challenges and outline practical, achievable solutions and partnership ideas tomorrow (31 October).
“As the level of government closest to their communities, cities are in a unique position to be able to identify issues and act quickly. They are nimble,” Lord Mayor Doyle said.
“Many of us are in the same boat when it comes to social, environmental and economic issues so it makes sense to share our ideas, programs and strategies for improvement.
“We need a national approach to our cities. Partnerships are the answer.”
The CCCLM meetings with Federal Members of Parliament will take place today (30 October).
